To me backlighting is the most beautiful way to photograph people.

I am inspired by it. I feel it.

Today, I shot for myself. I edited for myself.

I allowed the haze and the flares and all the crazy colors that come with it.

I especially love backlighting on my daughter Katie. She has the perfect hair for it and I am in love with these shots of her.

And to the boy in class that told Katie she “was almost not ugly” I ask you this, “Have you seen her in backlighting?” :)

Me & Mine is a personal project I am doing this year to get myself in more photos with my family. I feel very lucky to be doing this project with some amazing women who are free of judgement and full of support! I love them! These are a few photos of our recent spring break in Hawaii. I love the top one of our family purely for the reason that Jeremy is photo bombing us…and I didn’t even know it until I looked at the pictures back home. Surpise! His older brother, Jason, took this very sweaty and sandy picture of us. Don’t forget that it’s a circle and to continue on to one of my favorite photographers and now grandmother Gail Pomare. Congrats to Gail on her brand new baby granddaughter!! She’s beautiful!

I think I have fallen back in love with garage light. I don’t know how I ever fell out of love with it but right now I’m hooked. It is the most exquisite light there is…and its all I want to shoot. Our project 12 portrait group challenged ourselves to shoot using directional light from the garage. It took me awhile to get started because I am so used to shooting outdoors and taking my cues from the sun, but once I did I didn’t want to stop. I started with Lindsay and shot her through a small door that leads into the garage. My grey background was very far back and thus it looks black with the shadows. I wanted it to feel as if she was there with nothing around her. I shot Grant next and we had the garage door open and the background at an angle to the door’s opening. I positioned him just in the shadows. Katie went last and by then I was feeling a bit more in the groove. She was further into the garage where there was more contrast to the lighting. I love how her shots turned out. It is amazing what light can do and how by changing up your angle you can change up the mood of a picture. Light can convey so much emotion- its pretty amazing! This was a super fun challenge and I can’t wait to see what Suzanne Carey Photography | Hattiesburg, MS did for this week! Please check her out and continue around our circle!

One of the biggest blessings in life for Carl and I has been the strength and support of our wonderful family. We feel so lucky to have such true and genuine people in our lives. Last week some of our Minnesota cousins came to visit and it is always like they just live down the road. I love that the kids all fall right into that pack mentality and they all just roam together. They just be together. No pretense. Just being themselves. So of course, Carl and I being were just being our selves when we were channeling America’s Next Top Model. I think we really did a good job of “working it” for the camera. We did a ton of stuff together but these were just a few. Some of these images were taken with my camera and some with the iphone. Our assignment this week was to create a narrative portrait of each of our children. My own personal goal was to capture the images with out me setting up any of the details. To make myself find the details in the moment and to document it. I think each image captures a bit of their stories. I am always amazed how the same two parents can produce such different children. These photos were taken with my iphone5.

Grant. Laid back. Soccer. Xbox. Track Pants every day. Wouldn’t be surprised if he wore those same pants yesterday.

Lindsay. Focused. Determined. Athletic. Uncluttered.

Katie. Tons of homework. Organized chaos. Self motivated to be better, stronger. Loves animals. Not a minute to spare.

Love the Nash family! I can still remember the first time I met Leslie. She was one of those people I instantly liked and felt very comfortable with. Kinda like I had known her my whole life. One of the things I really admire Leslie for is her creative soul. She has an incredible shop on Etsy called LNDesigns which you should definitely check out! We had a lot of fun with this session. I learned all about sticks and construction sites thanks to her little guy.

Here’s the Wilson Family. Couldn’t be a cuter family. This little guy had just turned one and was adorable and as happy as they come. Really enjoyed this session and discovering the creek bed together.

Project 12 Portraits: {Window/Low Light} | Danville Ca child, family & senior photographer

This is a new personal project for the year 2013 that I am really enthusiastic about. I joined with 5 other gifted photographers to learn how to create more authentic portraits. Many of our themes will come from Chris Orwig’s book, “People Pictures.” Our goal is to try new approaches with our cameras and post processing techniques. We are going to try some new stuff out and see if it fits.

This weeks exercise was low window light. I find my groove best when I shoot with backlighting so this felt a bit awkward and dark for me. But I like how they turned out. And in keeping with the authenticity I am not requiring teeth brushing, hair combing or clothes changing. It is what it is and they are who they are.
