This is a story of a man who was in the wrong place at the wrong time.   A story of a man whose feet are enormous.  Who knew God made feet so big (size 15)!   Who has proven that in a time of struggle he doesn’t need to stand on his own two feet… he can do it on one.  That legs aren’t required to be a dad; a perfect body is not necessary to love or be loved by your family.  This is a story of a man taking it one step at a time….and winning.  This is Mark’s story.

It was April 30, 2011 and Mark was standing on a side walk in Oakland while waiting for his family, who were inside a nearby store.  He was hit by a truck that jumped the curb and pinned his leg to a building, while the rest of him went through a plate glass window of a beauty salon.  Through the bravery and kindness of strangers Mark survived the unthinkable.  He should have died.  But he didn’t.  He is here on this earth for a reason.  Maybe it’s to show us what grace looks like, how love can heal even the deepest wounds or show what determination looks like.  What ever the reason I am glad he is here.  I am glad that in two weeks after a long journey, Mark will be able to get a prosthetic!  A new beginning.  Just after the accident, a friend told Susan, Mark’s wife, “Knowing your family this will only be a speed bump in life not a dead end.”  I couldn’t agree more.  Yea, the rules are a little different and so is life but it doesn’t have to change everything.  He can still beat his sons in basketballicon smile Project 26 {week 2} Faceless Portrait | Danville CA Photographer

I have known the Recker family for years. They are truly one of the most remarkable families one could ever meet. Their passion for life is contagious and their admiration and commitment to one another admirable. I have no doubts that they will continue to amaze us all and inspire us to be better individuals.

Krista,
You did an amazing job capturing the true essence of this remarkable family. You are so incredibly talented and have an incredible artistic eye.

*gulp. I want to high five this guy, his wife and boys then pin a medal on his chest for getting up day after day to take up his life, against all odds. But I get the sense that such accolades are wasted on him. I needed to read this, I needed to hear another hero story, thanking. And Krista, your images are absolutely and totally compelling. What a blessing to know you!
